Hey Folks, Happy Friday!

You think fundraising for your expedition is a hard task?! Imagine if there was two of you! Ruth and Luke are brother and sister and have been fundraising like mad, check out their awesome story..

My initial thoughts about the trip were that it would be absolutly awesome to go to Kenya but I was sure my parents wouldn’t let me sign up as it would be far too much money as my twin sister really wanted to go as well. Thus i was extremely excited to learn that my mum loved the idea of it and thought that it would be an amazing experience. the only question I asked of myself was ” how on earth are me and my sister going to raise around £4000 each?”

The first amount of money we raised was around £100 each from a Christmas treasure hunt. Our mum had come up with the idea very quickly and it was very easy to plan, we just went out along the broadway and looked at decorations in shop windows that we knew were only up for christmas. They were then added to two diffrent treasure “maps”, a shorter version and a longer version. We hung sweets on our christmas tree and gave them out as prizes when the hunters came back from their searches. We also sold handmade make your own bunting and bag kits. The biggest money maker was a hundred square. A square could be bought for £2 and when all hundred were sold one lucky square was drawn and the buyer was given £50 prize money. So we made £150 from the hundred square and around £50 from treasure hunters and bunting buyers. The only problem that we really faced was advertising it and spreading the word about it, but in the end we had a good turn out.jr-fundraiser-april-2017-min-min-crop

Recently we have done a sponsored haircut which raised about £500 each. Our older brother and our mum both had their hair cut. My brothers was 19 inches and my mums was 14 inches. It was kindly done for free by a local hairdresser. We have also recently done a stall at a local plant and craft market, I sold soy wax candles and my sister sold cards with photos on that she took herself. From this event I raised around £20 and my sister raised about £110. The table organiser at the market very kindly reduced the cost of using the table by £5 as she knew that we were trying to fundraise for expedition.

We did a Chinese meal at a buffet restaurant fairly local to us. In total we raised £550, part of this was from the auction of a Jonathon Trim limited edition print that he donated to us. He is a local artist who paints scenes of our local area, the picture went for a total of £55 with a normal price of £65. The total amount of money that I have raised so far is £1354 and my sister has raised £1611.

I have supplemented the money brought in by the bigger events by doing cycle coaching at my local primary school and cat-sitting for friends and neighbours. All of my Birthday and Christmas money is also going into my Kenya fund, I also asked for money instead of eggs this year at Easter . My sister has a paper round which gives a steady flow of money into her collection. The fundraising journey so far has been slightly stressful but has not taken away that initial excitment at being given this opportunity to go to Kenya!!!

The next fundraiser that we are planning to do is a family fun cycling event over the summer. After that we are going to do a concert of some kind and a racenight. I have asked some local buisnesses and some larger chains if they would be willing to sponsor me and have their logos printed on my t-shirt, as of yet few of them have responded so I will be following it up shortly.

Great work Luke and Ruth!
