Trip Overview

Camps International (Responsible Travel Tourism Award Winners 2008) and Bournemouth University Sports Development Unit have been working together for the past two years to create a Sports Development Expedition (SDX) which offers a unique opportunity for volunteers to get 'hands-on' experience of coaching in less fortunate, rural communities and schools in Kenya.

It gives students the chance to directly apply their skills and knowledge to provide inspiration and all of the benefits of their own education to others. In 2008 University of Portsmouth joined the expedition and this year both Surrey & Southampton University have also joined the programme.

Camps International (Responsible Travel Tourism Award Winners 2008) and Bournemouth University Sports Development Unit have been working together for the past three years to create a Sports Development Expedition (SDX) which offers a unique opportunity for volunteers to get 'hands-on' experience of coaching in less fortunate, rural communities and schools in Kenya.

It gives students the chance to directly apply their skills and knowledge to provide inspiration and all of the benefits of their own education to others. In 2008 University of Portsmouth joined the expedition and in 2009 both Surrey & Southampton University also joined the programme. This year we are hoping to have more University’s join the programme and offer this opportunity to more students.

Elements of SDX

African Gap Year SDX - Barry with Kenyan ChildThe SDX has a focus on community project work in the form of improving sports facilities and coaching methods. Day-to-day project goals are varied and under the supervision of the team leader and camp staff, you will be challenged to apply yourself and your skills to anything from low-level construction to coaching sports with children from several local schools.

As a grand finale to the expedition, you will be central to organising an inter-schools sport festival. Expedition members will spend time within the schools coaching the children, selecting teams and training the squads in readiness for this high profile event.

Obviously, you can't go to Africa without taking part in a spot of safari, so we have also included a 3 day Big Game safari at one of the amazing National Parks and there will also be some time to chill out on the beach, relax and take in some recreational scuba diving and other water sports at the end of your expedition.

Orientation & Accommodation: The teams will be based in Kenya in one of Camps Internationals’ fully secure and staffed community camps. We use the first few days to settle you in, orientate you to the local area and prepare you for the first phase of your trip.

Sports Development Expedition Sports Project Work

African Gap Year SDX - Netball

As part of the expedition the team will spend time within schools coaching and teaching the children as well as building and improving their current sports facilities. Volunteers will be split between the schools and throughout the month coach, train and select squads to compete in an inter schools festival. We are also keen to develop other optional sports as well as a regular 3km fun run in both locations, which was piloted in 2008.

Gap year community project work Community

Cultural visits will be run to give students a unique experience of the different cultures and Swahili and Malay lessons allow communication with members of the community using local dialect.

Gap year conservation - Camp Kenya wildlife Wildlife

The Kenya team will go on a safari to one of the National Parks and experience the game drive of a lifetime. Africa provides some of the best safari experiences in the world and we make sure you get a couple of days or so, dedicated to watching wild animals in their natural habitat.
