Trip Overview
A Gap Year doesn't need to be a whole year. In-fact, many of our gappers fit their gap year travel into a period of just one month. Elements of CK1
Community
Camp Kenya was established in partnership with a rural African community and we continue to fund ongoing projects and sustainable development everywhere we operate. The key to good project work is a good attitude and commitment and your involvement is both diverse and challenging. You can expect to spend your stay working on a wide range of initiatives where you really will get out what you put in; for example at the Makongeni Primary School your day to day work may range from classroom refurbishment and building desks to teaching and re-plantation projects. Our bond with the local people is a strong one and we hope that yours will be too as you work alongside them and become a valued part of their community.
Wildlife
Mwaluganje:
Our main wildlife project is based at The Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary. Mwaluganje is one of the most amazing locations you will visit during your stay with us. It has the densest population of elephants per square mile for anywhere worldwide and we are fortunate enough to operate a mobile camp there for our working safaris. You will have the opportunity to spend time camping and working in the Sanctuary alongside the Wildlife Rangers, local communities and of course, the elephants. You will typically spend 4-5 days at Mwaluganje and the focus is to develop wildlife initiatives, which benefit the local communities and in turn the elephants. Besides all of this, Mwaluganje is quite simply stunning and although the camp here is a little more basic than some of our others, roughing it in the bush will give you a taste of real Africa!
Safari:
Safari is the Swahili word for journey and no visit to Africa is truly complete without one. There are very few experiences that rival a journey through the wilderness, watching wild animals in their natural habitat. You will travel 3 hours to a National Park for your 2 day safari through the Kenyan Bush. You will be accommodated in safari tents and will drive out every day with a guide in specialist vehicles for game viewing drives, it's rough, it's dusty and it's everything you could want from a real Safari! You will look out for all big game and with the Big Five regularly spotted; you have good odds for some great sightings.
Ocean
We work in partnership with Southern Cross Scuba and Water Sports who offer a range of additional activities from Scuba diving and snorkeling to Big Game fishing. Additional ocean activities can be booked and paid for before you travel but can also be added on at any stage of your placement (Subject to availability).
If relaxing on the beach is more your thing then you will have ample time to do this too, the weekends are normally your own and we provide scheduled camp transport to take you to the beach. Diani Beach is a great spot and with plenty of beach bars and restaurants to choose from, there is always a great social element to your trip.
Mountain
You don't have to sign up for an adventurous activity, but if you do, the options are superb. You don't need to be superhuman - average fitness and determination is all it takes.
Mount Kenya
As the highest mountain in Kenya at 4985 metres, this is an amazing 5 day trek. You will receive a detailed equipment and preparation guide in your expedition guidelines document that we send to you on receipt of your Booking Form. You will leave camp and spend one night relaxing in a local hotel where you receive a briefing from your expedition leader. The following morning a transfer drive delivers you to the park gates from where you start your trek. Over the next 4 days you will walk through some of the most stunning scenery Kenya has to offer culminating in a night ascent of the summit, ready to watch the African sunrise. Day 5 gives you a chance to rest your feet as we transfer you in vehicles back to the Hotel for a hot shower and another good night's rest. Our success rate of getting you to the top is over 50% and the personal feeling of achievement is extraordinary.
Kilimanjaro
Kilimanjaro is the highest free-standing volcano in the world and the tallest mountain in Africa . At an altitude of 5895 metres it presents a formidable challenge to all who attempt to climb it. Many tourists fail as they try to save money by opting for a 4 or 5-day climb, the success rate for which is approximately 40%. We take our time and as such over 95% of our climbers reach the top. Our trek lasts for 7 days and follows the stunning Machame Route to the summit, Uhuru Peak . We use professional porters and guides, excellent equipment and guarantee a range of cuisine that would challenge many restaurants. Our safety systems are tried and tested and you will be led at all time by trained professionals. If you choose Kilimanjaro as your adventure package you will not be disappointed as you sit on the highest point in Africa watching the sunrise.

The Projects
Every time someone books with us we use a proportion of the money to fund our projects. There is no room for us to act as politicians; it’s all about results. If we commit to a community partnership and say we will do something; we do it. It does mean that we are not the cheapest option, but for all the right reasons.
Please note that the projects that you will undertake may occasionally vary from the itinerary due to sudden changes in priorities or feasibility.
Community Projects
Muhaka - School Project
Muhaka Primary School is situated in the heart of the community on the lower slopes of the Shimba hills of Kwale District. The school is set next to a beautiful protected forest close to the main road leading to the rolling Shimba hills and Sable Valley. The community is made up of the indigenous Digo tribe, who are mainly subsistence farmers and therefore have limited income. The school was set up in 1944 but has been neglected such that its total pupil population today is only 300 only. Read More...
Makongeni - School Project
Makongeni is a small rural community situated 50 km south of Mombasa in the district of Msambweni. Makongeni village consists mainly of residential dwellings with one or two kiosks that sell basic grocery supplies. The only school in the village, Makongeni primary school, was originally designed to accommodate around 150 pupils. However, since the recent advent of free primary school education in Kenya, this small school now facilitates over 600 pupils! Read More....
Wildlife Projects
Mwaluganje -
Elephant Sanctuary
We have launched a wildlife project in partnership with Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary in the Shimba Hills. The Elephant Sanctuary is a community-based program, where by local people have “leased” their property to a community based trust, which manages the sanctuary for the benefit and preservation of the elephants. It also provides valuable revenue for the landowners and local people, realised through eco-tourism and gate entrance fees. Read More...

Where You Stay
Please note that the camps you will be staying in may occasionally vary from the itinerary due to sudden changes in priorities or feasibility.
Muhaka
Camp Muhaka (Moo- haa- ka) is Camp Kenya’s newest camp, which was purpose built and opened early 2007 specifically for Gap volunteers. Muhaka Camp is set in the heart of a small African community on the lower slopes of the Shimba Hill’s, on the boundary of the beautiful ‘Kaya’ (sacred & protected) Muhaka rain forest. Close interaction with the local community and the Muhaka Primary School students (Link) is totally unavoidable given the camps central location in the village! ...[Read More]
Makongeni
Camp Makongeni (Mak-on-gen-ee) was the first camp we built and it's named after the African community that lives there. The list of opportunities available to you from Makongeni is amazing. On a personal level you are going to make lifelong friendships and strong bonds with the African community. Evenings in camp are often spent around the fire with your friends or at the camp bar, which you run. Days playing sports and exploring the mangroves with the local kids will be a big part of the memories that stay with you forever and make Camp Makongeni unique.
The beach is a short drive away ...[Read More]
Camp Tsavo
Camp Tsavo is located in Rukinga ranch, directly south of Tsavo East National Park, and is our biggest and most ambitious wildlife project to date. This ecosystem is home to a large diversity of flora and fauna, many species of which are classified by IUCN (the World Conservation Union) as vulnerable, threatened or endangered, and boasts a large population of predators, especially lions.

Mwaluganje
Camp Mwaluganje (Mwa-loo-gan-jee) is one of the most amazing locations on the planet (in my humble opinion of course!). It has the densest population of elephants per square mile for anywhere worldwide and we are fortunate enough to operate a mobile camp there for our working safaris. You will have the opportunity to spend time camping and working in the Sanctuary alongside the Wildlife Rangers, local communities and of course, the elephants
