Trip Overview

Camp Tanzania programmes operate from the Moshi area of Northern Tanzania, literally in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. As with everything we do there is a strong community and wildlife focus and there is probably nowhere better in the world to enjoy an experience combining these elements.

Tanzania is home to over one-quarter of Africa 's wildlife and we have included our favourite safari route as part of your stay. For the really adventurous you can use your third week to climb Kilimanjaro or Mt Meru and to finish things off we have thrown in 10 days on Zanzibar Island at the end.

Elements Of Camp Tanzania 3

Gap year community project workCommunity

Gap year travel - Tanzanian cloth merchantOur Tanzania community project is based with Mbokomu Primary School in Korini - Kusini village and is just a short 5-minute walk from camp. You will normally walk to and from school with the African kids who are predominantly from the local Chagga tribe. There is years of sustainable project work at the school starting with the construction of a new school canteen for the 800 plus students who need to be fed every day. Pupil ages range from 7-14 years old and the majority religion for the population of approximately 3000 people is Catholic with some Lutheran and Muslim. There are over 14 classrooms to be renovated, desks need building and water is currently available 250 metres away so we would like to bring a supply closer. The community project work lasts for 3 weeks of your trip and is the main focus and probably most rewarding part of your time with Camp Tanzania.

Gap year conservation - Camp Tanzania wildlifeWildlife

It is widely recognised that Northern Tanzania provides a backdrop for possibly the best safari experience in Africa and we haven't cut any corners. On completion of your Community and Mountain phase, we take you on a camping safari to a variety of National Parks . The word 'safari' is Swahili for 'journey' and you will spend 3 rough, dusty and thrilling days exploring the different habitats that each park has to offer. If you have never been on safari this will be something that you will remember for the rest of your life. We use experienced professional guides for all our trips and they will work hard to ensure you see as much variety of wildlife as possible. This is an incredible experience to complement the challenge of the previous 3 weeks.

Gap year adventure - Zanzibar sunset

Okay we have to start by coming clean with you. Camping is not permitted in Zanzibar so I am afraid you will have to make do with a comfy bed and a mixture of hotels and beach bungalows but we still get to refer to it as Camp Zanzibar. It's an awesome location and whilst we have included the basics like somewhere to sleep and some 'must do' experiences like snorkelling and touring through what was once one of the greatest global trades that gave Zanzibar its name: the spices. It is essentially a chance for you to chill out and live it up on the beaches. You start in Paje, which can only be described as a beach paradise on the south side of the island where you will have plenty of time to chill, work on your tan and snorkel in the turquoise lagoon of Paje.

During your stay you will have a chance to visit ancient Stone Town, which is a mix of African and Arab culture, and we suggest you spend the first day visiting the markets after walking through the enigmatic alleyways that make up the town and a chance to check out the local arts and crafts. Your Zanzibar phase is bed and breakfast only so you can choose how you spend your days on the beach and enjoy a well-earned break at the end of your expedition.

Gap year adventure - MountainMountain

We have left it up to you to decide whether you choose to trek Kilimanjaro or Mt Meru and this is something you need to let us know when you book. It comes at an additional cost of course and if it's not your thing then don't worry there is plenty of community project work to be completed. Kilimanjaro is one of the most famous mountains in the world, the highest freestanding volcano in the world and the highest mountain in Africa. We take 7 days to trek up and down Kili and 5 on Mt Meru. Both climbs are a real challenge and to stand on the summit of either and watch the sun rise over Africa is emotional and is a once in a lifetime experience to say the least.

Fitness

With the exception of optional mountain trekking, none of the activities featured require anything more than a reasonable level of fitness. We advise that if you plan to trek you will need a good level of walking fitness and advise us of any medical issues that we need to be aware of. No special skills are required for any of our projects.

The Projects

Every time someone books with us we use a proportion of the money to fund our projects. There is no room for us to act as politicians; it’s all about results. If we commit to a community partnership and say we will do something; we do it. It does mean that we are not the cheapest option, but for all the right reasons.

Please note that the projects that you will undertake may occasionally vary from the itinerary due to sudden changes in priorities or feasibility.
