Gap year adventure Africa - Mt Kenya 7 Day

Challenge yourself to climb Kenya’s highest peak and experience the exhilaration of trekking the second highest mountain in Africa. As the highest mountain in Kenya at 4985 meters and second only to Kilimanjaro in Africa, this is an amazing 5 day trek.

Highlights

  • Enjoy the stunning views of Kenya’s Rift Valley.
  • Experience the physical and mental challenge of trekking Kenya’s highest mountain.
  • Unquestionably some of the best trekking in Africa.
  • 2 nights in a comfortable Kenyan Lodge before and after the climb.

Itinerary (6 nights/7days)

You will receive a detailed equipment and preparation guide in your expedition dossier that we send to you on receipt of your Booking Form and the following provides you with a good overview of what you are letting yourself in for.

We take our time on this trek and over 95% of our climbers reach the top. Our trek lasts for 5 days and we are careful in how we select our route to the summit, Pt. Lenana. We use professional porters and guides, excellent equipment and cater for all types of dietary requirements.

Our safety systems are tried and tested and trained professionals will lead you at all times. If you choose Mt Kenya as your adventure package you will not be disappointed as you sit on the highest point in Kenya watching the sunrise.

Day 1, Arrival in Nairobi – Transfer to a Lodge . The afternoon is spent preparing for the ascent of Mount Kenya. Apart from a practice climb up Mukenya, our local hill you will be shown how to pack and waterproof a backpack and put up a tent, how to prevent blisters and learn walking techniques. (LD)

Day 2, Sirimon Gate to Old Moses Campsite (3,100m) – The track route takes you uphill through a beautiful section of the forest dominated by Pencil Cedar and Podocarpus trees before entering into heath land. For the lucky, you may see one of the many forest elephants that inhabit the region. Overnight at Old Moses Camp. (BLD)

Day 3, Old Moses Campsite to Liki North Campsite (4,100m) – A moderate day up to Liki North tarn and camp. The air gets thinner and the walking gets harder so you will go slower but reach camp by mid afternoon for a well-deserved rest. Overnight at Liki North Campsite. (BLD)

Day 4, Liki North Campsite to Shiptons Camp (4,200m) – A day when you drop down into valleys only to ascend again. You finish at the base of the old volcanic plug that makes up the rocky peaks of Bation, Nelion and Pt. Lenana. On the trek up, the vegetation changes to moorland grass with small flowering plants and the amazing giant lobelias, groundsels and senecios. You pass by Shiptons caves, once a hideout for the Mau Mau. Overnight at Shiptons Camp. (BLD)

Trekking Africa - Mount KenyaDay 5, Shiptons Camp to Pt. Lenana (4,985m) to Old Moses Campsite – An early 2.30 am start sees you on the Summit Circuit Path, which is arguably the finest walking trail in all of East Africa. Experience stunning views, tarns, glaciers, ice carved rock formations and precipitous valleys. You will be in search of Pt. Lenana for a sunrise celebration with spectacular views to the Aberdare Ranges to Kilimanjaro. After a cup of tea or coffee you will start your descent via the Summit Circuit Path to Shiptons Camp and then Old Moses for a well-earned rest. Overnight at Old Moses Campsite. (BLD)

Day 6, Old Moses Campsite to Sirimon Gate – A leisurely walk to the park gate through towering Podocarpus and Cedar forest. Transfer in vehicle to comfortable accommodation at a Lodge, a chance to have a drink and celebrate your achievements. (BLD)

Day 7, Departure – Transfer to Nairobi for departure. (B)

Fitness

The summit of Point Lenana is at 4985 metres and you will be walking purposefully slow to acclimatise to the altitude. Mount Kenya is quite a unique mountain, known for its steep faces and rapidly rising altitude. It has claimed up to 50% of all high altitude pulmonary oedema cases in the world each year so it pays to go slow. If you are a regular walker and are moderately fit, there should be no problems in the ascent and a regular routine of jogging, cycling or walking three times a week will help with your fitness.
