This tour has been designed for the responsible traveller that is keen to take on a rewarding challenge and support our ongoing community programmes, but who may be short of time, or wants to include this element as part of a wider travel experience. Makongeni Camp only sleeps 22 people so you can be assured of a very personal and comfortable experience.
Our Life programme allows you to reach out to less privileged communities and really make a profound and lasting difference. You will work alongside local Kenyans on school projects and help improve the lives of the local people, with particular emphasis on enriching the lives of local school children. The time spent here may seem short, but you will be making a valuable contribution to sustainable development in a beautiful part of the world.
You will spend five days renovating classrooms and other community amenities that will provide you with opportunities to learn a range of new practical skills such as bricklaying, plastering and painting, as well as experiencing the unique cultural interaction with the local people. The Indian Ocean is only 30 minutes away and so we have also included an optional trip to the beach.
Highlights
- Sustainable community development volunteer programme
- Interact with a friendly Kenyan community as a guest, not a tourist
- Enjoy the beauty of the Kenyan coastline and stunning Indian Ocean
Itinerary (9 nights/ 10 days)
Day 1, Mombasa – Makongeni Camp – A Camp Kenya guide will meet you at Mombasa airport. You will then take a drive through Mombasa town to the South Coast, through rural Kenyan villages and a scenic drive to Makongeni Tented Camp in time for lunch. After settling in to your accommodation, you will be given a full briefing and orientation before dinner. (LD)
Day 2, Makongeni Camp – After an enjoyable breakfast, you will be guided through a typical rural African village and walk up to the Makongeni Mangrove Swamps where you can meet members of the Makongeni Baraka Conservation Group, which is led by women from the area. The group is constructing several eco-friendly fishponds, restoring mangrove forests and developing ecotourism activities. From there you will pass through small villages to visit the local school where your community work is based. (BLD)
Days 3 - 5, Volunteer Programme – Participate in the ongoing community projects at the school with other volunteers and the local community. (BLD)
Day 6, Ocean day – An opportunity to relax by the beach, do some shopping, or sign up for one of the many optional adventure activities available at Aqualand Adventure Centre, such as Scuba diving, snorkelling, a dolphin spotting trip and kite surfing. (BD)
Day 7-8, Volunteer Programme – Your last day with the community and a time to put the final touches to the projects you have been involved with and to bid “Kwaheri” (Farewell) to those you have been working with. You will be surprised how hard it is to say goodbye after only a few days. (BLD)
Day 9, Day Safari to Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary - The Elephant sanctuary offers beautiful scenery characterised by undulating hills, steep ridges and winding water shades, tucked away in the lush wilderness of the Shimba Hills. The sanctuary is famed for it’s high density of elephants. Learn about Elephant behaviour and the threats facing this amazing animal. (BLD)
Day 10, Departure - Transfer to Mombasa and depart (B)
Please be aware that the exact nature of the work you will be involved in will depend on the current needs and priorities of the school and village. As volunteers it is important to remain flexible and keep in mind that sometimes priorities and/or emergencies may arise which may result in your duties changing at short notice. We also reserve the right to change the order of your itinerary (not the components) to suit client numbers and seasonality. Please note that teaching projects will not be available during Kenyan school holidays.
And...
A trip to Kenya would not be complete without a safari to view the Big Five and a few days on Diani beach which is unquestionably one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the world. After a hard week of community work, we recommend you take a two day safari through Tsavo East with one night at Ndovu House on our Camp in Tsavo and one night at Satao Rock Camp which has one of the finest views across the Tsavo plains.
And to wind down completely before you return home, we suggest a couple of days on the beach at one of Diani’s small resorts. We have a long standing relationship with Pinewood Village so we recommend you have a look by clicking here. If you like what you see let us know and we would be happy to arrange your additional days on the beach and on safari.
And if you are still up for more of an adventure, we offer some of the best climbing and diving expeditions you can find in Kenya! Click here for more adventure trips.
