Welcoming our first ever teacher familiarisation trip from the UAE to Camp Tsavo, and what an epic success it was! For most, this was their first time stepping foot in Africa and I am positive that it won’t be their last. All together we had 30 teachers travelling from schools across the Middle East, and I was the lucky one to lead the group to experience first hand our Camps culture and what we truly stand for.
Here are some snapshots of events that went down and my personal favourite highlights…
Sasenyi Primary School
School orientation and student interaction
We were welcomed by the Head Teacher and walked around each classroom, understanding the sad truth of challenges the community face to educate their children. Welcome songs, high fives and selfies were at full swing with the students and teachers.
Classroom painting & digging a foundation
Gloves, goggles, masks at the ready and let’s go! A very intense morning of hard labour, making finishing touches to a classroom and beginning to dig the foundations of the next Camps project.
Donations & class handover
We had the privilege to hand over the completed classroom that a lot of our past volunteers have put solid efforts towards, so a special thank you to those who were apart of it.
Tumaini Women’s Group
Mama Mercy took to the stage to educate teachers on her passion to empower the community to become independent business women with a sustainable income. It was touching to hear inspirational women being creative and making movements with the little they have. Of course to finish off the day we had teachers shakin’ it like a local, Camp Kenya style!
Masaai Mara Tribe
Entering a world of long lived culture and unheard of traditions.
Marungu Hills eco walk & team BBQ
With the team in high spirits, we hit the hills for a day of adventure, learning the historic background of the hills and finding out interesting facts from indigenous plants whilst en route to the very top. We enjoyed a cave BBQ and cold tuskers whilst snapping some breathtaking panoramic views.
Tsavo East National Park
It was time to kick back, relax and to experience the best of Africa from our seats. What a perfect way to finish off an incredible week, we managed to see 3 of the big 5!
Days were complete after a cold tusker at sundowner with great new friends.
I had such an amazing time with Camps International. It was great to get the chance to do some community work, not just the touristy part of Kenya. The trip was brilliantly organised & Sof was a top guide. I made some fantastic new friends and had an unforgettable experience.”
– Heidi Brown, Jumeirah College School
“The trip to Kenya was a once in a lifetime opportunity! We helped to develop a school, worked with local people including the inspirational Mama Mercy, trekked and had a BBQ with breathtaking views, saw lions on a safari and filled ourselves with chapati’s and other delights! I met some awesome people, including Sof the trip leader who was a legend in every way. I couldn’t recommend this trip more!”
– Lottie Lucas, Kings School Al Barsha
“A truly amazing experience! Loved every part of the trip; from visiting the school, meeting the amazing women of the village, getting sweaty climbing up hills, going on safari and living with creepy crawlies. It was all topped off with meeting great people, those looking after us and working for Camps and those sharing the incredible experience! I would visit Kenya again in a heart beat.”
