James has done such a marvellous job so far! Packed full of handy tips and lovely motivation, take a look at James’s fundraising journey to date! It just goes to show determination and perserverance goes a long way! Well done James, you are a true inspiration!  Check it out folks….

I first heard about the Borneo expedition when talking to my PE teacher about the experience. He said that it was “a life changing experience” that I would be “crazy to pass up.” Despite the amazing stories that he told me, I was still apprehensive and nervous about the expedition. However, I had already decided that I would, without a doubt, be experiencing these wonderful stories first hand.

There was of course the obstacle of the cost… Now, when I first thought about tackling the £4500+ mountain that was the price I was, of course, concerned as to how I would be able to achieve such a feat. However, instead of trying to raise this money in one hit I decided to break it down into a smaller, more achievable monthly target.

At first, I struggled for ideas to begin to raise the money, but I have a couple of small jobs so I could get a small income until I thought of any other fundraising ideas. This was a great incentive to raise more money as I could see the numbers rising every week and the amount more that I needed to raise lowering!

My first attempt at fund raising was close to the Christmas of 2015. I managed to set up a stall at 2 of my local primary schools for their Christmas fete (with help from my mother). We set up games and made small presents (Malteser reindeer and reindeer fodder) to play and sell at the event. They were both very enjoyable but, sadly, not a large amount of money was raised. This put me off doing many other small event such as this as it would have taken many events to raise a substantial amount.5

I continued to work for several months, however I knew that I needed to do something else…

I have been playing golf for a few years now and I was wondering if I could mix my love of the sport with my fundraising attempt. My father had the eureka moment of setting up a Charity Golf Day! We had months to prepare for the day and due to this I had enough time to contact most of the major golf companies and receive lots of very generous donations from them all! As well as that I had fantastic donations from the members themselves! It was a great day with brilliant weather and 68 competitors! This resulted in an amazing £1597.83 being raised and me now having all of the initial £4500 needed to go out to Borneo!james

I now plan to continue to work in my two jobs (as a Waiter and in my golf shop) to gain more money for equipment and the required injections (which I am not looking forward to)! But, I know that it will all be worth it as I am growing in excitement now due to the expedition being in just under a year’s time!4

If I had to give advice to anyone who is struggling to raise the money, I would firstly say to try and get themselves a job. It is a great way to earn a small amount of money that after a while will begin to tot up. Also I would say that you need to be patient… It took me and my family several months to come up with a way of raising a large amount of money. However, I was reasonably lucky, this fundraising is a marathon, not a sprint. Do weekly work, be patient and you will reach your goal!2

Just keep on thinking about what the work you are doing now will result in and you will be fine! Good luck to all, keep the faith, you are doing brilliantly.

James.
