After finishing education, it can be difficult to know what to do next. Do you head to university or leap into the world of work? If neither of these options are filling you with excitement, a gap year could be the perfect option.

Here at Camps, we offer a variety of different gap year trips developed by our in-country team of experts. From wildlife conservation to community projects, you will be guaranteed to make an impact whilst volunteering with us. This unique opportunity will allow you to transform the lives of local communities whilst discovering more about yourself and what to do in the future.

Embarking on a gap year trip will allow you to:

Experience new cultures

Travelling provides you with an amazing opportunity to experience new cultures that you haven’t before. How many people can say they’ve visited the Maasai tribe in Kenya or trekked all the way to Machu Picchu in Peru? Learning about the people and wildlife that live in these countries and the issues that they face will be an eye-opening experience which will change the way you view the world and the people that live in it.

Increase your independence

Leaving home and fending for yourself can be a daunting prospect, especially if you’ve never been away on your own before. By travelling with Camps, you can learn what it’s like to have freedom and independence away from home and is great practice if you decide you want to go to university! But don’t worry if you’re still nervous about being completely on your own. Our trips offer support both before you depart and whilst you’re in country with our experienced local staff being with you every step of the way!

Learn a new craft

Never picked up a shovel before? Now’s your chance! On our trips you could be involved in low level construction on community projects or habitat restoration on our environmental projects. These projects will give you great transferrable skills and knowledge for when you return home. You will also have the opportunity to work closely with local people who will teach you traditional skills and crafts such as making paper from elephant dung or cooking regional foods.

Decide what your next step is

When you’re not sure about what you want to do in the future, taking time out to can be a great way to step back and decide what to do next whether it be university or finding a job. One of our previous volunteers, Lucy, has decided to follow her passion after volunteering on one of our trips: ‘my trip to Tanzania 4 years ago made me realise my passion for wildlife and now I do wildlife and practical conservation at uni. This year I’m travelling to Ecuador and Costa Rica on a placement year all thanks to Camps.’

Stand out at job and university interviews

Volunteering and experiencing new and amazing things, gives you some great skills and stories to shout about at job and university interviews! Pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, communicating with new people and learning new skills are important abilities that employers look for and are all things you will learn to do whilst on your gap year trip with Camps.
