A Taste of Peru
– Duration: 2 weeks –
Immerse yourself in the rich and vibrant culture of Peru on this 2 week programme. You’ll be working alongside local people in the rural communities surrounding the marvellous Lake Titicaca.
You’ll play an important part in projects that are designed to provide sustainable long-term support for the poorest communities in Peru such as building a restaurant to support the countries increasing rural tourism trade.
This programme is designed to impact the following UN Sustainable Development Goals:
The impact that you'll make
Community Development (Titicaca)
The communities surrounding Lake Titicaca remain some of the poorest in Peru. The remoteness and inaccessibility of this region means that there is little or no help available from surrounding regions. You’ll help by continuing to build community facilities such as a restaurant for the community so that they can recieve a sustainable income from passing tourists.
Camp Titicaca arguably offers the most spectacular views of any camp. Located on the shore of lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake (3,800m above sea level), you’ll be rewarded with gobsmacking views of the lake and surrounding mountains from your accommodation the minute you wake up!
The camp itself is situated in the heart of this small and charming lakeside community where you’ll get the privileged opportunity to spend time with the Quechua people and learn about their extraordinary way of life.
Location: 380 km (7 hours drive) from Cusco/Arequipa Airport
Accommodation: Brick & adobe buildings with comfy mattresses & bedding. Flushing toilets, warm bucket showers & basins
Power: Mains electricity. US standard plug / European round 2-pin plug
Signature dish: Chicharron de trucha – Lake trout, battered & fried
Social: Chill out spaces with wood burning stove, camp fire, volleyball court, lake beach
Day to Day
Welcome to Peru
Arrive into Juliaca airport where you will be greeted by a member of our Camps crew who will take you to nearby Puno for an overnight stay. You have some time to explore Puno, the folkloric capital of Peru, and rest after your flight.
Head to Camp Titicaca
Today we hit the road and take the 2 hour journey to our Camp Titicaca, located right on the shores of the stunning Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. After settling into your accommodation you’ll be given a brief orientation of the camp and surroundings to prepare you to start project work tomorrow.
Community project work
Spend the next few days getting stuck into projects designed to support community-based rural tourism. The area you will be working in is renowned for its spectacular views of the lake, and many tourists come to stay here. You will help the community by building a restaurant so they can receive visitors and obtain income from the increase in tourism.
Explore Uros floating islands
Enjoy a boat ride to the unique Uros floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca and gain an insight into the traditions and culture of the indigenous community who live here. Hike up the top of Taquile Island in time for lunch, enjoying impressive views over the lake. Spend the night camping under the stars on the shores of Lake Titicaca, in a wonderfully peaceful setting.
Continue community projects
We take the boat back to Camp Titicaca and continue with our work here for the next few days before handing the projects back to the community.
Today is your final day in Peru – say your farewells to the team before we take you back to the airport in time for your flight home.
