Cambodia Community Internship 6 week

Work alongside the dedicated team at Treak Community Centre, getting involved in a variety of initiatives to create opportunities and sustainable livelihoods for deprived communities. This incredible programme will give you a real insight into the running of an NGO (non-governmental organisation) and valuable hands-on experience to prepare you for a career in teaching, social work, community development and more.

The vision behind the Treak Community Centre is to create opportunity for local people. The centre is run by Cambodians, with a key focus on teaching new skills to children and young adults, whilst also supporting parents and the wider community.

The village of Treak is situated 4km south of Siem Reap. There are around 2,000 people who make up 330 families, living in the village. 20% of families are on the government poverty list with individuals earning less that 50 cents per day. 30 families live in extreme poverty with no land, job, savings or help from family members.

As an intern you will spend your first 4 weeks supporting the team in their existing programmes including:

  • Building a new school for the village
  • English classes for nearly 400 children and young adults
  • Kindergarten level education for almost 100 pre-school children
  • IT classes for children
  • Library access for all children
  • Community garden to train villagers in sustainable practices and to secure nutritious food sources

You’ll also help to develop other areas, such as:

  • Environment & sustainability awareness
  • Basic science workshops and classes
  • Arts & crafts workshops
  • Basic health, hygiene and nutrition workshops

You will also spend 2 weeks staying in Camp Beng Mealea. This delightful rural camp is set on the outskirts of Teuk Lich village within Beng Mealea commune. Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in the world. Seasonal food shortages and lack of employment opportunities leave rural young people very vulnerable to continued and increasing poverty. You’ll help by developing a new classroom at the school to tackle overcrowding and lack of resources.
